Dr. Bernard Liveson Berejena, born on the 5th of March 1960, passed away on the 27th of October 2023, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service to education. He began his journey through academia at St. Mary’s Paradza and Berejena Primary Schools, where his thirst for knowledge was evident from an early age. Dr. Berejena continued his education at Berejena Secondary School, setting the stage for a lifelong commitment to learning.
With a passion for teaching, he pursued his dream at the United College of Education (UCE), earning his Diploma in Education, and becoming a qualified primary school teacher. His educational journey took him to the prestigious University of Zimbabwe (UZ), where he excelled academically and obtained a BA Honours Degree in Curriculum Studies. Dr. Berejena’s pursuit of excellence did not stop there; he went on to achieve a Master’s in Curriculum Studies, further enriching his understanding of educational practices.
In 2022, Dr Berejena reached the pinnacle of his academic journey by earning a Doctorate in Education from Durban University of Technology, a testament to his unwavering commitment to educational advancement. Dr Berejena’s career was marked by both his teaching prowess and administrative acumen. He shared his knowledge and passion for education with students at various institutions. Notably, he taught Mathematics and Geography at Vhunjere Secondary School in Gutu, before taking on a leadership role as the Substantive Head at Rio Tinto Mhondoro High School.
Dr. Berejena’s influence continued at Joshua Nkomo Polytechnic College, where he served as a lecturer. In 2004, he transferred to Bondolfi Teachers’ College, where he played a pivotal role in the Professional Studies Syllabus A (PSA) and Mathematics sections. Over the years, he assumed various roles, including Head of Teaching Practice, Dean of Students (2011-2012), and Acting Vice Principal (2012-2023). His passion for education knew no bounds, and from February 2023, he served as the Acting Principal, where he continued to inspire and guide the college’s educational mission until the time of his passing.
Dr Bernard Liveson Berejena is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy, three devoted daughters – Blantina, Doreen, and Barbara, a son named Great Abel, and three cherished grandchildren. He leaves a void in the lives of his family, students, and colleagues that will be difficult to fill.
Tragically, Dr Berejena’s remarkable journey was cut short when he succumbed to injuries sustained in an accident near Chivhu on the 27th of October 2023. He was returning from a graduation ceremony in Harare, having celebrated the accomplishments of the next generation of educators and learners. Dr Bernard Liveson Berejena’s enduring legacy is one of knowledge, inspiration, and unwavering dedication to improving education. He will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all whose lives he touched. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
